ApolloCamp – Quick Thoughts | March 17th, 2007
Danny Dura is just wrapping up his cookbook session here at ApolloCamp. It’s been a great event so far. I think of all the sessions Sean Christmann’s session where he hooked up a Wii controller to a Flash Star Wars light saber game via bluetooth by using a Flex/Java bridge, the Artemis project. It’s amazing that in Flash/Flex/Apollo you can build a game that’s basically as interesting and engaging as any Wii game that is taking the video game world by storm. This is unique here because most of the apps being demoed here are web apps just run in Apollo. But I think some are missing the fact that Apollo is going to allow all the HTML and Flash developers (millions!) to build desktop apps, that can connect if need be. It’s going to be an exciting ride.
One interesting question I heard tonight was: “what’s the incentive for users to get the Apollo version a web app?” Other than offline use for productivity apps, that’s a good question. For example the eBay app, I guess running in the background to get notifications is a good incentive…but is it compelling enough? For me I’ll use productivity apps, a few, in an Apollo setting. But I think we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg…the shear number of developers who can now build hybrid desktop/web apps is going to allow for a new wave of creativity that I don’t think we’ve seen before.
