Joe’s speaking about Dog On Rails at Open Web Vancouver | February 26th, 2008

Congrats to Joe! He’s giving a talk onDog On Rails at Open Web Vancouver

Whenever we think of Dashboard Apps, we usually think of things that show visualization of data on a Web Application. How many tracks were downloaded, how many hits, how many people have visited the site, etc, etc. However, this is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dashboards and visualization. There are many more apps that need good centralized mangement and visualization, and a web management application can be exactly what you need. Currently most of these apps were done in the 90s and don’t work very well. Nobody really talks about how I can connect my toaster to the web, except for hobbyists, but I think that it’s going to happen again.

FreeTheNet is a really cool project to provide free Wifi in Vancouver, Nitobi, but more specifically Joe is a big supporter of this project.

VanUE HSBC “User Centered Design Group” Event - Thurs Feb 21st | February 12th, 2008

User experience you can take to the bank! VanUE » HSBC User Centered Design Group

HSBC is a global bank with over 100 million customers in 83 countries worldwide. As a global team dedicated to championing the needs of all of HSBC’s customers, HSBC User Centered Design (UCD) views the customer experience as one that has no borders. With user research and user interface design teams worldwide, UCD has the ability to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. UCD projects range from intranet designs and applications for internal staff to innovative engagements with ATMs and mobile banking. Join UCD as the team shares some of its memorable experiences setting the bar for the “World’s Local Bank.”

Sounds interesting. Some of the best talks on usability I’ve been have been from experts working directly for business or product as opposed to outside consultants (not trash talking, ’cause I’m one of em). I’m also very interested in usability and ux in the banking world since so many Nitobi customers are large financial institutions. Banks also have to deal with other issues like large data sets, privacy, security and accessibility more diligently than many businesses so it’s neat to understand how they balance everything. Incidentally many big banks were *very* early adopters of Ajax…before we even had this clever little term:)

Speaking About AIR at Web Directions North | January 8th, 2008

I’ll be giving a quick overview of developing with AIR Jan 30th at WDN 08. Should be a blast.

Web Directions North - Crash Course in AIR
There comes a time when web developers need to reach beyond the browser to allow users to go offline, use local files or get rid of the hideous browser chrome. The Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) is an up an coming runtime technology that allows desktop applications to be developed with HTML, JavaScript, Flash or Flex. The AIR runtime and SDK are completely free so anyone can get started immediately.

Andre Charland will will give an overview or AIR, the APIs you get access to and how to build a simple Flex and HTML application with it. From there we will explore some of the tools available to make AIR development easier and faster. We’ll finish up with a few important usability guidelines and real world case studies of AIR projects.

Oh ya there’s a ski trip included in the conference so it’s probably worth dropping everything else in life to attend:)

Ajax and Beer 2.0 at Shebeen Room (Wednesday, February 6, 2008) - Upcoming

Ajax and Beer 1.0 was totally awesome. The only thing better than the first thing is the second thing. Especially if it has more features. Behold! I present to you: AJAX AND BEER 2.0

The Vancouver Ajax and Beer Meet | November 13th, 2007

Come chat about Ajax and drink beer. I’ll be there. Please RSVP at Upcoming.org:

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 7:00 PM

Shebeen Room
9 Gaoler’s Mews
Vancouver, British Columbia (Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps)

Description
Skip the presentation and head straight to the bar.

This is a completely informal hang out for developers interested in client side technologies but don’t want to ever hear wtf Ajax stands for ever again.

Come, have a beer and relive the days of DHTML, mock Silverlight, mess around with Adobe Air or just get shit faced. Bring your laptop if you’re up for it, we will be hacking, but you should feel no obligation to. Ad Hoc presentations are cool as long as they are not product pitches.

This event is kindly sponsored by the good people at Nitobi.

Looking forward to learning about cool stuff our local friends are up to! Thanks to Brian Leroux for spearheading this!
