We’re globetrotting this month, taking PhoneGap to various conferences in Europe and the US. I’m headed to BlackBerry DEVCON September 27-30 in San Francisco.
BlackBerry DEVCON is a great opportunity to see what’s new with BlackBerry apps and check out some new technologies for the first time. The conference is all about sharpening skills, meeting peers and learning about the latest developer tools, which is why we’ll be showcasing PhoneGap at the conference.
If you want to be there, you can get a $150 discount off the current registration price when you use the code DD6SSC when registering.
Conferences are also a great chance for us to meet more of the PhoneGap developer community. If you’re going to DEVCON, I hope you’ll come say hello. We’ll be demoing PhoneGap at a booth on the showroom floor. Hope to see you there!
As the calendar flips over to April, we’re stoked about some of the things Nitobi is up to this month. For starters, we’ll be at JSConf in Washington DC from April 17-18, 2010. If you haven’t been to JSConf you’re missing out on one of the best JavaScript programming events of the year. It’s sold out this year-likely because the theme is pirates-but be sure to put it on your calendar for 2011.
While we’re at JSConf, we’ll be connecting with the good people of Washington DC for a PhoneGap training session. We’ve been having a great time spreading the PhoneGap love across North America and we hope you’ll join us for this full-day workshop on April 16, 2010. You’ll learn how to build mobile applications in HTML and JavaScript while still taking advantage of core features of the Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian and Palm.

Earlier this month we were selected to present at the Web 2.0 Expo’s LaunchPad event, and even better we won the people’s choice award!! I was stoked, the whole team was! It was a big honor. I think my presentation was OK, but it’s really the team, the idea and the community behind PhoneGap that made it a winner!
Here’s my 5 min talk:
Here’s the questions from the judges:
The media, customer and investor interest we’ve had since has been nothing short of amazing.
The whole team at Nitobi is honored to have been picked as one of 5 companies out of 80 to present at the Launch Pad event at Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. I get 5 minutes to convince a panel of judges and the crowd (voting in real-time with sms) that PhoneGap is the hottest technology product launching at the event. It’s described as “American Idol” for business…no pressure;-)
“For 2009, we continue the tradition of showcasing innovative and promising new companies at Web 2.0 Expo. While the definition of a launch has gotten cloudy in this age of public betas, we’re looking for new companies or products that make us take notice. And while venture capital has been the focus in past years, the reality of the market is that companies must gain the attention of customers. So our judging panel and criteria this year focus more on what is essential and transformational in today’s market than on ability to get funded. Along the way, we’re sure the VCs in the crowd will find several startups they’d like to talk to!”
Good luck to the other presenter and I hope we all manage to provide some value or at least entertainment to the crowd.
The event is at 1:15-2:15pm Thursday April 2nd in the Keynote Room (Ballroom - 3rd Level).
I have 2 free passes is anyone is interested. Just leave a comment or email me.
Brian Leroux and Brock Whitten will be in San Jose this Sunday March 1st at the 360|iDev. They’ll be giving a full day seminar on PhoneGap starting with the basics in the morning and helping you build your own iPhone Apps and working on the framework in the afternoon.
What you will learn:
* How to get started building PhoneGap applications
* An overview of Objective-C, Javascript API and XUI framework
* How to overcome barriers to cross-device development
* How to build applications for web-enabled devices with open standards
* How to test and deploy an application to a mobile device
* How to quickly and easily convert web applications to a native mobile app
* Differences in capabilities across devices
* How to retrofit existing web applications to utilize phone features
Along with Konductor and MixMatchMusic we’re hosting party. Some come down and let us buy buy you a drink or two:) 22nd Century will be playing a bunch of sweet cover songs from from Ramones, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and other hard rock/punk bands starting at 10pm.
Just saw this course posted online. I wish I was in NY so I could go.
Ineraction design for RIAs.
Some problems you will be able to solve when done with this class:
1. You will work on the redesign of a mission-critical financial services application to be rolled out to 6,000 financial consultants. The previous system was deployed as a desktop installed application using .NET services. You are tasked with redesigning it to work within a web browser. What is the right set of technologies to consider? What are the differences? How do I and should I replicate the behaviors of the desktop application in this new medium? What pitfalls should I be aware of when working on my design?
2. You are hired to design a hotel reservation system for the latest brand hotel to come from a major hospitality organization famous for top tier service. What advantages are there in using RIA behaviors and technologies to help enhance this new brand? What can go wrong to cause a backlash effect?
David Malouf is the instructor and is a very skilled interaction who’s well respected in the community and an active member of IXDA list. Hey David want to make a trip to Vancouver to put this course on here too? The weather is nice in summer:)
Dave Johnson will be giving a talk on JavaScript and DOM Design Patterns at Community One.
There is a hole in the current knowledge and practice of user interface development, even though most Ajax developers confront UI development on a daily basis. Although design patterns have been around for a while, little attention has been paid to the HTML Document Object Model (DOM). This presentation uses several concrete examples to explore the need for and application of DOM design patterns.
This presentation shows why DOM patterns are consequential, given the complex and often misunderstood interplay between the DOM, DOM events, and JavaScriptâ„¢ technology-particularly event ordering, bubbling and capture, and event triggers.
In this presentation, attendees will learn how to use the JavaScript programming language to write succinct, useful libraries that address key DOM design patterns such as composite controls. They will leave with an understanding of how DOM design patterns can help speed web development and result in more-robust solutions. They will also learn about various repeatable patterns that can be applied to DOM scripting, specifically how DOM events and JavaScript technology work together.
Mark your calendars for Monday, May 5th at 11am. CommunityOne is free and you also get the first day of JavaOne for free so you’ve got no excuses!
That same day we’re going to be hanging out and participating in the RedMonk unconference track. Our areas of focus are going to be the business of RIAs and some advanced topics in Ajax development.
The RedMonk Unconference: expect a rich mix of open source, dynamic languages, development in general, Java, social media high jinks, and all of the usual things you’d expect from the industry’s first open source analyst company. This year we plan a Rich Internet Panel (with JavaFX, Adobe, Nitobi, and other folks) and a discussion about the Mylyn Eclipse personal productivity IDE, with a special appearance by Atlassian’s Mike Cannon Brooks. This is the CommunityOne unconference by you, for you, so please come along and set the agenda.
Dion and I were (again) the two Ajax-tag-alongs on the OnAIR Tour in Europe. So we had a quick chat about what Nitobi has been up to with our Ajax components.
The first leg of the European OnAIR Tour has just wrapped up in London. It’s been a great time. I’m just putting together all my thoughts on the tour but I’d post this video of my talk in Spain.
