Adobe Dreamweaver 5.5 Supports PhoneGap | April 12th, 2011

We’re very excited that Adobe has now announced their support for PhoneGap! The gist of is it is now you can package your apps with PhoneGap and launch the iOS and Android emulators directly from within Dreamweaver. This version of Dreamweaver also bakes in support for jQuery Mobile which is one of the most popular frameworks used inside PhoneGap. I think this is awesome! This a big move forward for Adobe embracing mobile, open standards (HTML5), the mobile web and open source!

Scott Fegette, Dreamweaver Product Manager, has the most in depth write up on it. Here’s a snipit.

For Android, the complex process of installing, configuring, and verifying the Android SDK has always been a bit of a chore. Dreamweaver CS5.5 takes all the pain out of this process by providing an “easy install” option, which will do all of the above for you in the background. Although the Apple iOS SDK tools are subject to a different licensing model (and only available on the Mac platform), once you’ve installed the Apple iOS SDK (or Xcode from the Mac App Store), you simply point Dreamweaver CS5.5 to the /Developer directory on your hard drive and you’re ready to go.

Greg Rewis senior evangelist at Adobe also has a great post on the topic and video explaining how it all works:

PhoneGap is all about making mobile app development easier and more accessible to broad audience of web developers out there do getting in bed with Dreamweaver is a great step in that direction.

One thing the Adobe folk don’t promote as much as I think they should is the fact that web developers can call native apis like camera, contacts, notifications etc from PhoneGap now within Dreamweaver. That’s at least as exciting as packaging for app stores:)

If this blog post seems a day late and a dollar short I apologize. I obviously new this functionality was coming out in Dreamweaver, but no one at Adobe told us they were launching yesterday:P Next time!

Be sure to check out the official Adobe blog post for more info on new features in Adobe Creative Suite 5.5.

PS. Please excuse their typo on the opening slide of video. It’s PhoneGap not Phone Gap. I’m sure it was just video production company who just didn’t know what’s up! :)

great stuff from adobe .. ;)

  3. WebZopp Says:

Think it will be availlable on both platforms. Adobe is bringing all application to both platforms with nearly no feature missing on one. (Except the LCD which is WIN only.)
Problem might be the iOS SDK, which is, what I understand, only availlable on Mac.

  4. Bob E. Says:

Support for PhoneGap from within Dreamweaver will be available on both platforms. On Windows, you can only build for Android since you can’t install the iOS developer tools on Windows. On Mac, both Android, and iOS are supported.

Since the app is packaged with PhoneGap and not developed the ‘native’ way, does it qualify for listing in the iTune app store where we can sell the app? Will Apple block us?

PhoneGap apps are native apps they just happen to run HTML5 and JS. Here’s a few apps that have been built with PhoneGap and submitted to various app stores.

I do a lot with PHP to create arrays and do SQL. Do I create special PHP pages and call them in AJAX or do I have to rewrite everything in JavaScript?

Can Dreamweaver/PhoneGap be used to create apps for Windows 7 Mobile and the Blackberry Playbook?

  11. Bart Steed Says:

This is absolutely incredible. Huge thanks to both teams for bringing such an amazing resource to front-end developers!

  12. Andre Charland Says:

@William not yet. but in the near future WP7 and then Playbook will be support will be added to PhoneGap and the hopefully via PhoneGap Build to DW.

@Basil you’d have to create HTML pages and then call services via JavaScript on your sever…hopefully in a JSON format.

  13. Andre Charland Says:

    @Bart Thanks!

  14. Jason Says:

For iOS, Once you build within CS5.5 and phonegap generates the .app package. How do you test it? How do you provision and sign it so you can test it locally on your device before deploying to Apple App store? I can’t find any resources for this step. Adobe says tutorials are coming but if anyone has any inside information I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Well this is a stumbling block. Just brought 5.5 and installed it, and when I go to the dreamweaver new->more->samples the mobile framework thing is missing.

Is this only in some particular versions of 5.5?

  19. Sean Says:

No my bad, just screwed up my configuration. Ignore me!

  20. Rob Says:

This is just super exciting! Now I just feel silly for wasting all of those hours searching through other IDE’s like Eclipse, Netbeans, and Titanium Studio to start my app development, and it was right in front of me with Adobe the whole time!

    Thanks for the quick tut!

  21. Justin Says:

@Jason, great question. I’m interested to know that as well.

Where is the steps within Dreamweaver where you specify the code signing details, like within Xcode?

Also, where is the .ipa put that you could distribute to users when doing ad hoc?

Probably that is because, camera api is not working at all in dreamweaver cs 5.5. Neither the full example code from “Camera” (Documentation/phonegap_camera_camera.md.html) is working, nor is capture.captureImage (Documentation/phonegap_media_capture_capture.md.html#capture.captureImage) when built using dreamweaver.
