Open Source FAQ

What does it mean that Complete UI is open source?

This just means that the source code for all the components in CompleteUI is available for free and can be used according to the open source license agreement.

What open source license does Complete UI fall under?

Complete UI is released under the GPL V3 - you can see more details at http://gplv3.fsf.org.

Why did Nitobi open source Complete UI?

Why the change? We strongly believe open sourcing Complete UI will benefit our developer ecosystem in several different ways:

  • You'll be able to see all the source code
  • The code base will get better faster, with input from you and the rest of the community
  • You will benefit from other developers' bug fixes and enhancements
  • Better security -- no more security by obscurity
  • It's FREE, if you don't want to purchase support or special server libraries

What happens to my current subscription?

We know you bought our software (thanks for that!) and we don't want you to get the short end of the stick. In addition to the free and open source code, we are also providing two different paid support packages and we're automatically upgrading your license. Here's how it will work:

  • If you bought a single developer Complete UI license you will be upgraded to Nitobi's Basic Support Package plus a commercial license, which means you can include Complete UI in enterprise development projects.
  • If you bought an enterprise license, you will be automatically upgraded to our Advanced Support Package, plus a commercial license.
  • If you bought a Java or ASP.Net release of Complete UI, it's business as usual. You have your full license, plus you get a commercial license to the JavaScript and an Advanced Support Package, even if you originally bought a single developer package.

Where do I get support?

There are three professional support packages available for purchase, tailored to meet your specific demands. Support packages give you a variety of ways to get your questions answered in a timely fashion. More details are available here, and you can purchase the packages on our online store. You can also use our discussion group for free support from our developer community.

Which Nitobi products are not open source, or free?

We have open-sourced the following Nitobi products:

  • Nitobi Toolkit - the Ajax library that's the backbone for Complete UI
  • Complete UI Components - nine fully-featured user interface components developed with Javascript and CSS
  • Popular server libraries - libraries for binding our Ajax components to data on your PHP, Classic ASP, or ColdFusion MX server platform.

We will continue to sell:

  • ASP.Net and Java packages of our components, for integrating the components with servers on those platforms.
  • Adobe Dreamweaver Extensions - for quick and intuitive WYSIWYG development with our components.

We've invested heavily in these areas and believe they represent unique value over and above the open source Complete UI suite, which we still wish to make available to Nitobi's customers.

How can I contribute back?

If you'd like to become a contributor, email us at [email protected] and we will send you the contributor agreement. You can then checkout the source, either through Google Code or GitHub, and contribute away!
