Bloglines CEO on business Models

July 14th, 2005

I just read an interesting post , by Mark Fletcher CEO of Bloglines, about the benefits of releasing your new product or web service as soon as you can. As oppose to playing cloak and dagger with your competitors and customers. I’ve often gone back and forth on the topic. And I think we generally air on the side of keeping secrets at Nitobi. But as we’re interacting with and becoming part of the Web 2.0 and AJAX communities I’ve notice lots of Beta and 0.000001 type releases of 1/2 baked, not polished chunks of javascript or basic services/demos getting lots of blog attention and community uptake. It’s kind of interesting and is causing me to rethink our strategy a bit. We probably have at least 3-4 products we could put alpha .01 releases in very short order…instead of waiting for beta level almost full blown products. Mark’s point about 3 months is also interesting…I wonder if that’s because of fiscal quarters.

“Those who can not do…Blog”

July 14th, 2005

Quote from James Douma.

James made this joke in our office today, we all know the old quote “Those who can not do, Teach”. It is in a sense true. Thanks to blogging I’ve been able to read up on the thoughts of some of today’s brightest minds in technology, however there is far more noise created by useless blog posts. Like this one;-) Hopefully, through syndication and popularity based tools like google and delicious we can sort through the crap, without too much trouble.

New Sustainability research centre in Vancouver

July 14th, 2005

A new campus is being developed in the False Creek area of Vancouver, it’s purpose is aid, promote and support research in the field of sustainability. The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability is supported by a number of local large businesses as well as most of the major post secondary institutions in BC. It’s scheduled opening is 2010. The building will be totally green, and if I wasn’t so stuck on being on the north for access to the mountains I would love to get our office in there! Check out the story about this great new facility here.

CBC News Consumer group calls for warning labels on pop bottles

July 14th, 2005

CBC News Consumer group calls for warning labels on pop bottles.  And it’s about time, but I would like to see it go a step further.  What happens to people who give cigarettes to minors?  Well it’s illegal, and with obesity now being a bigger health problem in our society than smoking I think people who willing feed children junk food on regular basis should be treated the same way.
